Migration from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 complete
Lingopolo has just completed a hugely-complex migration from the old software platform (Drupal 7) to a new one (Drupal 8).
I don't normally talk about technical things going on in the background in these blog posts, as I like to focus on the changes which directly improve the language-learning functionality.
However, today I wish to make an exception.
The Editor Dashboard
The Editor Dashboard is the main place to see what entries need work of some sort on them.
The actual URL of this page will depend on the language, but will be something like:
What is the pedagogical basis of Lingopolo?
Lingopolo is based on the idea of Comprehensible Input presented in an interactive way. Comprehensible Input is basically learning language from hearing (or reading) material which is just a teeny bit above your current level, so that you can understand it, and new words or sentence structures in the material can be learnt indirectly from context.
There are some great websites which take this concept of Comprehensible Input very seriously, by containing videos in the target language from beginner to advanced.
Filling in the Image source
Whenver you add an image, you should always fill in the "Image source" field. This is so that we can track where the images come from to always have proof that they are copyright free.
The audio Source, Author and Licence fields
Sometimes we are allowed to use content from other websites.
This content must only ever be used if the other website explicitly grants permission under a Creative Commons licence where we are explicitly allowed to copy and transform their content.
One other important aspect of these licences is that we must give attribution:
The 3 key steps with Audacity
There now follows the 3 key steps which we always do with any recording. Whenever you process a recording, these are the 3 steps which you should always make sure are done.
Quiz type selection is now remembered
I'm pleased to announce that the Lesson Quiz type which you select will now be remembered and used until you change it again.
The quiz type is set in the Lesson Quiz tab. What this means is that if, for example, you select to do the Reading quizzes, all the quizzes will be Reading quizzes until you select something else.
What are the Examples of a word in use?
Wherever possible, every word has examples of its use in phrases. Each of these phrases are also in Lingopolo, so you can click on the phrase to browse in more detail, or click on the Learn button to practice just that phrase.
For example, the following is from the "dog" in French page:
