’s Morgens vroeg kwam er een boer voorbij.
Ja, het was werkelijk heerlijk daar buiten op het land!
of hij er van houdt, in het water te zwemmen of onder te duiken
Je zult toch wel niet wijzer willen zijn dan de kater en de vrouw.
En de moeder zeide: “Ik wou, dat je maar ver hier vandaan waart!”
Je kunt je fortuin daar wel maken, hoe lelijk je ook wezen mocht.
Zij legde heerlijke eieren, en de vrouw had haar zo lief, alsof zij haar kind was.
En het snelde naar het water, plofte er in en zwom naar de prachtige zwanen toe
De kip had korte, lage poten, en daarom werd zij juffrouw Kortbeen genoemd
Eindelijk werd het moede, bleef doodstil liggen en vroor in het ijs vast.
Kun je een hoge rug zetten en spinnen en maken, dat er vonken uit je lijf komen?
Hoe zou het hem ook in de gedachten komen, te wensen, zelf zo mooi te zijn?
En de kater was heer in huis, en de kip was er zo goed als vrouw, en altijd zeiden zij: «Wij en de wereld!»
Tegen de morgen vlogen de wilde eenden op en bekeken haar nieuwe kameraad eens.
En dat deden zij; maar de andere eenden in de rondte bekeken ze en zeiden tegen elkaar:
Hun poten gingen van zelf, en allen waren zij in het water; zelfs het lelijke, grauwe eendje zwom mee.
“Je bent verschrikkelijk lelijk!” zeiden de wilde eenden; “maar dat kan ons niet schelen, als je maar niet met iemand van onze familie trouwt!”

Buig je hals nu en zeg: Kwak!
