A second one was struck against the wall; it gave light, and where it shone against the wall, it went as transparent as a veil, she could see into the room.,
A single match would do her good, if she would dare to take one from a box, strike it against the wall to warm her fingers.,
All the windows were brightly lit, and it smelled wonderfully of goose roast; because it was New Years Eve.,
And she lit all the matches in the box, for she wished to keep her grandmother with her.,
And the matches were glowing so bright, brighter than at noon-day.,
and up there, there was no cold, nor hunger, nor fear, they would be with God!,
And what was more beautiful to see; the goose jumped off the plate, waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, and came towards the little girl.,
But in the corner, sat in the dawn of the morning whilst leaning against the wall; the poor little girl, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth,
frozen to death on the last evening of the year.,
her grandmother had never before been so beautiful, so big,
Her little feet she had drawn under her but now she became colder, but she didn't dare to go home she hadn't sold even one matchbox and she hadn't brought a single penny.,
Her little hands were almost completely frozen from cold.,
How the fire burned, and spread such a delightful warmth!,
I know you will go away again when the match burns out.,
In a corner formed by two houses, one of which protruded a little more than the other, she squatted down.,
In an old apron she carried a whole supply of matchboxes, one of which she held in her hand.,
In the cold and darkness, a poor little girl, with a bare head and barefoot roamed through the streets.,
It shone towards the little girl, as if she was sitting at a large iron stove.,
It was a warm, bright flame, like a light, as she held her hands over it; it was a wonderful light!,
It was very cold, it was snowing and it was already getting dark; it was the last night of the year.
