Verse 1 (The Village)
at home I still have a postcard
on which a church, a cart with horse
a butcher’s shop J. van der Ven
a pub, a lady on a bike
it tells you most probably nothing
but it is where I was born
this village, I still know how it was
the farm children in the classroom
a cart that rattles on the cobblestones
the town hall with a pump in front of it
a dirt road through the grain
the cattle, the farms

Verse 2 (The Village)
how simply they lived back then
in simple houses among greenery
with country flowers and a hedge
but apparently they lived wrongly
the village has been modernised
and now they are on the right track
because see how rich life is
they watch quizzes on the telly
and live in concrete boxes
with a whole lot of glass, so you can see
how the couch is at Mien’s
and on the sideboard with plastic roses

Verse 3 (The Village)
the village youths stick together
in miniskirt and Beatles hair
and shouts along with beat music
I know it’s their good right
the new time, just what you say
but it makes me rather melancholic
I still knew their fathers
they bought liquorice for a cent
I saw their mother’s skipping rope
that village from back then, it’s gone
This is all that remained for me.
a postcard and memories
