Understand spoken language

Speak clearly, but naturally and at normal speed

The aim is that the recordings are spoken clearly, but naturally and at normal speed.

The tendency is to think that since this is a site for people learning a language you should speak a little slower, or pause between words a bit. Wrong! The opposite is true! The aim of the site is to get people used to hearing words and phrases spoken completely naturally. What students need is practice hearing things at normal speed, so that when they encounter people in real life, they are properly prepared. The website itself will help students get used to this, through repetition, through the literal breakdown of a phrase, and through the ability to play the phrase slowed down.

So, please, whatever you do, don't add extra pauses which would not normally be there.

Obviously the words or phrases should be spoken clearly, but this does not mean that you should try and speak in any way more slowly than normal or unnaturally. Remember, the aim is that poeple learn to understand the language spoken normally!

The aim should be to speak as clearly as a newsreader, but also speak as naturally as a newsreader.

Don't worry about someone not understanding individual words in a phrase or sentence; for every phrase, students will also be able to listen to every word individually in the phrase breakdown. In real life a student will hear words running into each other, as one word flows naturally into the next. It is therefore extremely important that Lingopolo recordings have the phrases and sentences pronounced perfectly naturally. Clearly, but naturally.

The question may be asked whether the liason be pronounced (e.g. "des animaux" pronounced as [dezanimo])? Absolutely! The idea is for 100% natural language. Clear but natural. A user will be able to see that "des animaux" is made up of "des" [dei] + "animaux" [animo], and each of the words will be accessible in the breakdown, so the learner should never have problems understanding how a phrase is made up.

The motto is: Clearly, but naturally and at normal speed.

Example

For example listen to the following examples, and look how the literal breakdown section shows the individual words:
