Sometimes identical versions of the same word are created accidentally.
For example, in the images, below, you find:
- aime = likes (3rd person singular)
- aime = love; like (3rd person singular)
The first question to ask is, are they really identical? Is this a mistake that they are different pages, or is there a genuine difference in the meaning of the two translations, which means they should be kept as different pages? If there is some real reason to keep them as different pages, then they would simply need linking together by a "homonym" link.
In the case below though, they are the same word in English and French, but just with slightly different English for the translation. They really should be just one page. How to do it?
Step 1 is to decide which of the two pages should have any content moved to the other page and deleted.
The rule is simple: the older page should stay, and the newer page (which was created later, and which was created incorrectly, since a page already existed for this word) should be deleted.
To find out which is the more recent page, you will need to look at the page (or "node") number. Each page has a number; the earlier the page was created, the lower the number. By rolling the mouse over the tabs and looking at the URL in the bottom-left you can see the node number.
Here we see one is "node/5940". The other is "node/8192". Therefore the 8192 page is the older one and should have the content moved and be deleted.
The next step, once you have identified which page to delete, is to change any example sentences to use the correct version of the word.
Here there is just one example sentence. You can go into that example sentence and change the breakdown as normal to use the other version of the word. You can (and should) of course check in the correct version of the word that all the example sentences are now in its list of examples.
When all the example sentences have been transfered, you can delete the wrong page, by going into the "Edit" tab and clicking the "Delete" button. Make sure of course that you are deleting the one which you have prepared for deletion!
