“She tried to warm herself,” said some. «Προσπάθησε να ζεσταθεί», είπαν κάποιοι.
“Terribly bad!” said the princess. «Τρομερά άσχημα!» είπε η πριγκίπισσα.
“Thank God!” the duckling said with a sigh; “I’m so ugly that even the dog doesn’t want to bite me.” «Δόξα τω Θεώ!» είπε το παπάκι αναστενάζοντας. «Είμαι τόσο άσχημος που ούτε ο σκύλος δεν θέλει να με δαγκώσει.»
“That’s a good catch!” she said. «Αυτή είναι μια καλή παγίδα!» είπε.
“That’s because I’m so ugly,” thought the duckling, closing the eyes for a moment and then walked on. «Αυτό συμβαίνει επειδή είμαι τόσο άσχημος», σκέφτηκε το παπάκι, κλείνοντας τα μάτια για μια στιγμή και μετά συνέχισε να περπατάει.

“They are lovely children the mother has,” said the old duck with the rag around her leg. «Είναι υπέροχα παιδιά η μητέρα», είπε η γριά πάπια με το κουρέλι γύρω από το πόδι της.
“Use your legs!” she continued. «Χρησιμοποιήστε τα πόδια σας!» συνέχισε.
“Well there, how are you?” an old duck asked, who came to visit her. «Λοιπόν, τι κάνεις;» ρώτησε μια γριά πάπια, που ήρθε να την επισκεφτεί.
“Well, that is also a great pleasure!”, said the hen «Λοιπόν, κι αυτό είναι μεγάλη χαρά!», είπε η κότα.
“What a terribly big duckling that is,” she thought; “None of the others looks like this.” «Τι τρομερά μεγάλο παπάκι είναι αυτό», σκέφτηκε· «Κανένα από τα άλλα δεν μοιάζει με αυτό».
“What an absurd idea,” said this one. «Τι παράλογη ιδέα», είπε αυτός.
“What kind are you?” they asked, and the duckling turned in all directions and greeted them the best way he could. «Τι είδους είστε;» ρώτησαν, και το παπάκι γύρισε προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις και τους χαιρέτησε με τον καλύτερο τρόπο που μπορούσε.

“You are terribly ugly!” the wild ducks said; “But we don’t care as long you don’t marry someone within our family!” «Είσαι τρομερά άσχημος!», είπαν οι αγριόπαπιες. «Αλλά δεν μας νοιάζει, αρκεί να μην παντρευτείς κάποιον από την οικογένειά μας!»
“You don’t understand me,” said the duckling. «Δεν με καταλαβαίνεις», είπε το παπάκι.
“You have to decide that for yourself,” continued the old duck and left. «Πρέπει να το αποφασίσεις μόνος σου», συνέχισε η γριά πάπια και έφυγε.
