When adding numbers in French there are actually several ways to say "equals to". You may use the verb "égaler", or the adjective "égal". However if you're using the adjective, you need a verb before it, e.g.:
deux plus deux est égal à quatre.
When you're using the verb "égaler" it is sometimes with the 3rd person singular, sometimes with the 3rd person plural, but don't worry, in both cases they sound exactly the same! Also native French speakers themselves aren't always sure which one should be used as they never spell this out but usually write it with mathematical symbols.
