This is simply used in order to make things easier to pronounce and has no meaning. Look at the examples to see how it is used; without it, the phrases would be harder to pronounce. It is a bit like how we use "an" rather than "a" in English, since it is easier to say "an apple" than "a apple". I suppose if we were French we might have chosen to write this as "a-n-apple".
